5 things every salon owner should sort before they get too busy

You started your salon because you love what you do. Not because you wanted to spend your evenings chasing no-shows or manually updating your stock spreadsheet at 10pm.

The good news: a few small changes early on can save you a lot of headaches later. Here are five things worth sorting now, before your books fill up and you don’t have the bandwidth.

1. Set up online booking properly

If clients have to call or text to book, you’re losing appointments you don’t even know about. People book late at night, during their lunch break, while they’re waiting for the bus. If you’re not available to answer, they’ll just move on.

Online booking fills those gaps. Set it up once and it works for you around the clock.

2. Turn on appointment reminders

No-shows are expensive. A reminder sent the day before costs you nothing and reduces no-shows dramatically. Automated reminders are one of the easiest wins in the business. If you’re not using them, start today.

3. Know your numbers

You don’t need to be a spreadsheet person to keep an eye on your business. But you do need to know which services are making you money, which clients are spending regularly, and whether your revenue is trending up or down.

Good reporting software shows you this without you having to figure it out yourself. Use it.

4. Keep your stock under control

Running out of product mid-service is awkward. Overstocking ties up cash you could use elsewhere. Neither is ideal.

Track what you’re using and set low-stock alerts so you’re never caught short. It takes a bit of setup once, then it just runs.

5. Keep it simple

The biggest mistake salon owners make is overcomplicating their systems. They buy software with a hundred features, use about six of them, and pay for the rest forever.

Find tools that do what you actually need, nothing more. The goal is to spend less time managing your business and more time doing the work you’re good at.

Baxus is built around exactly this idea. Everything a salon needs, nothing it doesn’t, for $32 a month.
