What you need to know before starting a solo beauty clinic

Beauty artist bag chaotic

Going out on your own is exciting. No boss, no compromises, no splitting your takings with anyone else. Just you, your clients, and the work you’re good at.

But there’s a lot nobody tells you before you make the leap. Here’s what actually matters.

Sort your pricing before you open

Most solo operators underprice themselves at the start. They’re nervous about charging too much, so they charge too little, get busy fast, and then realise they’re working full days for not enough money.

Work out what it costs to run your space, pay yourself properly, and cover your products. Then price from there. Your time has value. Charge accordingly.

You are the business, which means you’re also the admin

When you work for someone else, there’s usually a receptionist, a manager, a system. When you go solo, that’s all you now.

Bookings, reminders, no-show follow-ups, stock ordering, end-of-day reconciliation. It adds up quickly. The sooner you get systems in place, the less of your personal time it eats.

Online booking is non-negotiable

You can’t answer your phone mid-treatment. You shouldn’t have to. Online booking means clients can lock in an appointment at any hour without needing you to respond.

It also means fewer “are you free on Thursday?” messages in your personal inbox, which is worth a lot.

Reminders will save you money

A no-show when you’re fully booked on your own is a big deal. That slot is gone and you’ve got nothing to show for it.

Automated appointment reminders sent the day before make a real dent in no-show rates. Set them up from day one and don’t think about them again.

Know your numbers from the start

It’s tempting to just focus on clients and deal with the business side later. But later has a way of arriving fast, usually around tax time.

Track your revenue, know which services are most profitable, and keep an eye on your product costs. You don’t need an accountant for this on day one, but you do need a system that makes it easy to see what’s going on.

Keep your setup lean

You don’t need the most expensive software, the fanciest fitout, or every product range under the sun. Start with what you need and add as your business grows.

The solo operators who do well are usually the ones who keep their overheads tight and their systems simple. Complexity is expensive and it creeps up on you.

Get your cancellation policy sorted early

It feels awkward at first. But a clear cancellation policy protects your income and sets professional expectations with clients from the beginning. Put it somewhere visible when people book and stick to it.

Clients who respect your time are the clients worth keeping.

You don’t need to figure it all out alone

There are great communities of solo beauty operators out there who have already worked through most of these problems. Find them. Ask questions. Learn from people who’ve done it.

And get your tools right from the start. Baxus is built for exactly this kind of setup. Flat $32 a month, no per-client fees, and everything you need to run your bookings, reminders, POS, stock, and reporting without spending your nights doing admin.

The goal is to spend your energy on clients, not on keeping the wheels turning.
